Turquel is an ancient village of the Coutos of the Cistercian Monastery of Alcobaça. It received its first settlement charter on August 1, 1314, given by Frei Pedro Nunes, and its charter two hundred years later, granted by King Manuel I, known as the New Charter (1514). The village was then called Villa Nova de Turquel. It is considered the Village of Roller Hockey.
